How to Start a Discount Shopping Club

Discount shopping clubs exist for all types of products. While some clubs are for people living in a specific area, other discount shopping organizations are welcome to members all over the country. Starting a discount club can be a great way to not only meet new people, but make money as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what type of shopping club you want to start--aside from it being a discount club, you need to choose what types of items members will receive deals on. For example, you can start a shoe discount club, local restaurant and eatery discount club or a discount club for children's online retail outlets.

    • 2

Name your discount shopping club using a descriptive name that applies to the types of discounts you will offer. For example, if you're starting a discount club for local restaurants, you could name it "OurTown Foodie Deals" or "OurTown Restaurant Bargains."

    • 3

Make a list of retailers that members will be likely to patronize. For example, if you are trying to start a shoe discount club, make a list of physical and online shoe stores that are popular or that your customers may shop at if they were getting a discount.

Determine how the discounts will be administered. Some discount clubs give their members coupon booklets, while others provide a website with exclusive coupon codes that can only be accessed by members once they log in. Another, more expensive, option is have custom membership cards printed for your club--this will cost you between $200 and $500 depending on how many members you plan to have initially.

    • 5

Set a membership price--this will vary greatly depending on the items your club focuses on. For example, a shoe discount club could charge members $75 per year because shoes are a luxury item and members will likely have disposable income. However, a children's clothing discount club would do better charging members $25 per year because it will be mostly moderate income families joining.

Contact the stores on your list by postal mail, email or phone and ask them about becoming part of your discount network. Emphasize to them the benefits of offering an exclusive discount as well as what you will give them in return. A sample letter to may look like this:

"My name is Your Name, and I am the founder of the Shoe Divas Discount Club, which provides exclusive coupon codes, deals and discounts to its members. Your store is one that is frequented by our members, and is well-known for your quality of merchandise and service. I'm writing to inquire whether you would like to become a discount partner by offering Shoe Divas members an exclusive deal. In exchange, we will place your store's logo and contact information on our website and in our monthly newsletter. We will also handle all coupon printing and distribution."

Attract members to your discount shopping club after you have built up a network of discount partners by placing fliers in participating stores (with permission), posting about your club on related internet forums and blogs, sending out a press release to media outlets frequented by prospective members, offering a free membership to the first few people that join and launching an informational website where members can also sign up.
