How to Carve a Pumpkin With a Dremel
If your goals for the Halloween pumpkin are intricate detail and unusual images, the easiest way to achieve them is to use a Dremel, a small, battery-powered combination drill and saw that employs a rapidly spinning blade to carve holes and lines into and through the pumpkin shell. By using a template you can come up with a professional-looking design that will turn an ordinary-looking pumpkin into a work of art. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pumpkin
- Carving knife
- Large steel spoon
- Pattern template
- Adhesive tape (optional)
- Dremel tool with stylus attachment
- Clean, dry cloth
- Flour
- Scissors (optional)
- Candle (preferably short and wide)

Preparation
-
1
Using a carving knife, cut a circular hole in the top of the pumpkin large enough to accommodate your hand. Slice at an inward angle of about 75 degrees from the surface of the pumpkin so that the top can function as a lid without falling in when set atop the finished jack-o'-lantern.
-
2
Scoop out the pumpkin's innards (fibrous material and seeds) using a large steel spoon. Carve about ¼ inch into the interior sides and bottom and the bottom of the lid with the spoon to create a smooth surface free of fibers. Level out the bottom so that your candle will stand upright.

3
Prepare the pattern template design you wish to carve into the pumpkin. Those experienced in template design can create their own; others can purchase templates or download them from the Internet.
Carving the Pattern
-
4
Hold or tape the template against the desired surface of the pumpkin. Find an area relatively free of marks, scars or other imperfections.
-
5
Drill holes into the template and pumpkin using the stylus on your Dremel set on high speed. The holes should follow the template pattern as closely as possible, spaced no more than ¼ inch apart. Drill all the way through the pumpkin's shell.
-
6
Remove the template and discard when you've finished drilling the pattern into the pumpkin.
-
7
Remove all debris from the surface of the pattern on the pumpkin with a clean, dry cloth.
-
8
Rub flour into the holes of the pattern with your hands; brush away the excess and wipe with the same cloth. This will reveal the pattern clearly.
-
9
Drill along the pattern lines with the stylus attachment set at high speed, connecting the holes. Start with the smallest portions of the pattern and work outward toward the larger sections.
-
10
Push the freed pieces of pumpkin shell into the interior with your fingers.
-
11
Remove any fibers or protruding bits of shell that are not part of the pattern once you've finished carving. Use either the Dremel or a pair of scissors.
-
12
Wipe down the surface of the pumpkin with a cloth, using great care; some stylus patterns are very delicate. Invert the pumpkin and remove all the bits removed while you were carving the pattern.
-
13
Place a candle inside the pumpkin, light it and place the lid on top of the finished jack-o'-lantern.

Tips & Warnings
The Dremel can also remove layers of pumpkin shell without penetrating it to create a thin layer that allows some light to pass through, though it's extremely time-consuming and requires a very steady hand.
