How to Draw a Dog That's Sitting Down

How to Draw a Dog That's Sitting Down thumbnail
Drawing a sitting dog can be tricky.

Drawing a sitting dog is not as easy as it may sound. While everyone understands the anatomy of a dog (two ears, four legs, a tail, etc.), trying to figure out the way a dog's body is manipulated when it is sitting down can be harder to conceptualize and even more difficult to draw. By adhering to the following steps, drawing a sitting dog can become an activity that is very doable and easy to repeat.

Instructions

  1. Drawing the Dog

    • 1

Draw the top of the dog's head. Draw an upside-down capital letter "U." Slightly curve the ends of the "U" to give the head a rounded shape.

    • 2

Draw an upside-down heart in the space between the ends of the "U." The heart, which is the snout of the dog, should be rounded rather than pointy, should be about two-thirds of the size of the "U" and should barely extend into the "U" at all to leave room for facial features of the dog.

    • 3

Draw two big eyes in the upside-down "U," which is the top of the dog's head and face. Two large circles side by side, each with a solid black dot in the middle will look great. Give the dog eyebrows as well.

    • 4

Draw the end of the dog's nose in the upside-down heart. Draw a horizontal black oval in the upper portion of the heart. To make it look shiny, leave a little white spot in the black oval. If you want to give the nose a little more definition, put a small point on the bottom edge of the oval.

    • 5

Complete the face by drawing the dog's lower lip. Simply draw a small "U" shape, where the upside-down heart comes to a point. You should now clearly see the face of a dog.

    • 6

Finish the head by giving the dog ears. On either side of the face, draw a wavy, rounded line that extends from near the top of the head and ends at the dog's lower lip.

    • 7

Draw the dog's neck and torso. Below the dog's mouth, draw two parallel, vertical lines for the neck. Below the neck, give the dog a torso by drawing a vertical, egg-shaped oval. The oval should be comparable in size to the dog's entire face.

    • 8

Draw four vertical lines jutting down, stemming from the center of the bottom of the torso. These lines should be about one-third of the length of the dog's torso and will be the dog's front legs. At the bottom of the two lines on the left, draw a horizontal oval. This is one of the dog's front paws. Do the same on the right side to draw the other front paw.

    • 9

Draw the back paws and legs. On either side of the dog, starting about one-third of the way up the torso, draw a horizontal straight line out that extends as far out as the dog's front paws. Starting at the end of those lines, draw a vertical line straight down until you get almost to the top of the front paws. These straight lines are the legs. To give the legs paws, give them rounded endings that mirror the shape of the front paws.

    • 10

Round out the straight lines of the back legs. Use your eraser to get rid of the original straight lines.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you would like to make your dog look more alert, give it pointy ears. According to Boyslife.org, however, "floppy ears add charm and personality to a dog."
