Instructions

    • 1

Remove any newly installed hardware devices from your computer. If you recently installed a new piece of hardware and your computer refuses to boot, chances are good that the new hardware is the source of the problem.

    • 2

Shut your computer down and restart it. Press the "F8" key while the computer is booting. Continue pressing the "F8" key until the Windows menu appears.

    • 3

Choose "Safe Mode" from the list of options. Safe mode loads only the minimum number of drivers required by your computer. Many times a computer that will not boot in normal mode will boot fine in safe mode.

    • 4

Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and choose "Properties" from the menu. Click on the "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager."

    • 5

Click on the plus sign to expand the list of hardware devices. Look for yellow question marks or red exclamation points. Right-click the hardware device and choose "Uninstall" from the menu.

    • 6

Restart your computer and allow it to boot normally, then visit the hardware manufacturer's website and download an updated driver for the device. Many hardware startup problems are caused by outdated devices.
