How to Get Pits Out of Chrome Rims

How to Get Pits Out of Chrome Rims thumbnail
Chrome rims can become pitted after repeated exposure to road salt and chemicals.

Chrome rims are susceptible to pitting from chemicals, such as road salt, which come into contact with the chrome on the rims. These chemicals will actually damage the wheel and create miniature indentations on the surface of the chrome. While it is impossible to completely remove these pits without having your wheels re-chromed at a repair shop, there is a way to reduce the appearance and severity of these marks.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the car soap in a bucket with water and wet a sponge with the soapy mixture, following label directions. Wash the wheel thoroughly, making sure to get into every crevice. Allow the wheel to dry.

    • 2

Apply chrome polish to a shop rag and work it into the surface of the chrome wheel. Apply the polish in circular motions with moderate pressure. Reapply the polish to the shop rag as needed. Cover one rim at a time in polish.

    • 3

Wipe each rim with a clean, dry shop rag. Move on to the next rim and repeat the polishing process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves when working with chrome polish to avoid skin irritation and burning.
