How to Make a Hook Rug Into a Pillow
Hooked rugs are made by pulling short pieces of yarn through a course woven fabric such as burlap or hopsacking, usually following a picture pattern. Since quite a lot of work goes into these, many people prefer not to place them on the floor to be walked on after they are finished. Small rugs (9 x 9 inch or similar dimensions) can be backed and used as throw pillows.

- 1 inch binding tape or strips of cotton
- 2 squares, 10 inch by 10 inch cotton, muslin or linen fabric

1
Bind the edge of the hooked rug to make sure that the fibers do not come apart. Beginning at one corner, hand stitch the edge of binding tape or strip of fabric to the edge of the rug, going all the way around the rug. Fold the tape or cloth over the edge of the rug, and tuck the other side to create a hem or finished edge. Press the binding in place, and hand stitch around the rug again, fastening the binding in place.

2
Place the rug on one of the 10 x 10 inch fabric squares. Sew the rug securely to the cloth backing, fuzzy side up using a sewing machine or hand back-stitch.

Pin the two pieces of 10 x 10 inch squares of cloth together, the right side of the second piece facing the rug side of the first. Sew around three sides of the squares using a sewing machine or a hand-sewn back-stitch.

Turn the pillow right-side out. Insert the pillow form or stuff with cotton, polyester fiberfill or foam. Sew the fourth side shut using a whip-stitch. (A whip-stitch is made by pulling the thread through from the bottom of the cloth, trailing it over the edge of the fabric, and bringing the needle through from the bottom again. It is commonly used for exterior reinforcement of seams or for making the final closure on stuffed items such as pillows or toys.)
