How to Check an Attorney's License in California
An attorney must be licensed by the state of California in order to be able to practice law in California. Every lawyer who passes the California bar exam will receive a license and will be issued a bar number. You can check an attorney's license if you know the attorney's name or bar number by visiting the State Bar of California's website and performing a search. Only attorneys with active licenses may practice law in California.

Navigate to the website for the State Bar of California. Locate the "Attorney Search" link on the navigation bar in the upper right-hand side of the web page.

Click the "Attorney Search" link. This will take you to the Attorney Search menu page. Click on the "Attorney/Member Search" link.

Enter the attorney's name in the in the search field. You can enter the attorney's last name in the search field, or the full name of the attorney. The more information you provide in the search field, the narrower the results will be. If you are unsure of the correct spelling of the attorney's name, you can check the box below the search field that will search for names that sound similar to the name provided.

Click the "Search" button. You will be taken to the results page. The results are listed in alphabetical order and provide the attorney's full name, status, license number, city of practice, and date of bar admission.

Click on the attorney's name to view a detailed record of the attorney. Once you find the attorney for whom you were searching, you can view more detailed information about her by clicking on her name. The information provided includes: activity status, contact information, what schools she attended, and whether there are disciplinary or administrative actions on her record.
