How to Calculate a Grade Using Percentages
When calculating grades, some teachers may use a straight average of all your assignments. However, many teachers categorize your grades and give different weights to different categories of assignments to put an emphasis on certain aspects of your performance. For example, with a straight average, if you had 10 homework assignments but only two tests, the homework would figure more prominently even though the tests might be more important. In order to calculate the grade using weighted percentages, you need to know how much each category is worth.

1
Calculate your average grade for each category by adding your scores on each assignment and dividing by the number of assignments. For example, if you wanted to calculate your test score category and you had three tests and got 92, 95 and 86, you would add 92 plus 95 plus 86 to get 273 and divide 273 by 3 to get an average of 91 percent.
-
2
Divide the weight of each category as a percentage by 100 to convert it to a decimal. For example, if tests were worth 50 percent of your grade, you would divide 50 by 100 to get 0.50.

3
Multiply the average grade as a percentage from step 1 by the weight of each category expressed as a decimal. Continuing the example, for your test average, you would multiply 91 by 0.5 to get 45.5.

4
Add the result from each category to calculate your total grade. For example, if your test category was 45.5, your project category was 28 and your homework category was 18, you would add 45.5 plus 28 plus 18 to get a total grade of 91.5 percent.
