How to Make Ceramic Clay

How to Make Ceramic Clay thumbnail
Ceramics clay allows you to create objects of art.

According to the website ceramics-directory.com, "Ceramics is the fine art of manipulating clays into hardened shapes." The website goes on to explain these hardened shapes can be aesthetic figures such as sculptures or ornaments or items of utility such as vases, coasters, mugs or bowls. The differences between homemade ceramics clay and homemade play-dough is that while you can sculpt and shape objects out of both, play-dough is more for amusement whereas ceramics clay allows you to create art.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the water and salt into a small pot and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat once the water begins to boil.

    • 2

Add the cornstarch and the cold water and stir the mixture. It should start to thicken right away. If it doesn't, turn the stove onto a low heat and stir it aggressively in order to encourage it to thicken. Allow it to cool.

    • 3

Sprinkle cornstarch on your work surface and place your cooled clay there. It's ready for you to sculpt and mold.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a few drops of scented oils such as lavender or vanilla to your mixture when it is boiling to give your finished items a pleasant scent.
