Put new grips on a Yamaha motorcycle handlebar

Whether you are driving with motorcycle gloves on or driving with your bare hands, handle grips are an essential part of the connection between you and your motorcycle. Motorcycle grips give you a firm hold on the handlebars and provide better control and manipulation of the motorcycle. Install new motorcycle grips on your Yamaha motorbike if the grips are old and worn out or if you simply want new grips. Yamaha grips have a specific diameter, so make sure you purchase grips made specifically for a Yamaha bike.

Instructions

    • 1

Slice the old grips off your Yamaha motorcycle with a sharp utility knife and slide them off. Be careful not to cut too deep to prevent damaging or scratching the plastic and metal materials under the rubber grips.

    • 2

Clean the metal surface under the grips thoroughly. Use a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol to remove any residual glue and dirt. This will make the new grips adhere better to the motorcycle handlebars. Yamaha grips have a snugger fit than other bikes, so don't worry if it's a tight fit.

    • 3

Spray WD-40 inside the new grips. Then slide the grips onto the ends of the motorcycle handles. Wipe the handle bar with a cloth. Leave the grips to dry for 5 to 10 minutes.

    • 4

Cover the open ends of the Yamaha motorcycle handlebars with duct tape. Cut the excess tape around the opening with scissors.

    • 5

Apply adhesive on the grips and then wrap safety wire around your new grips. Firmly twist the wire around the inside end of the grips and then use pliers to cut the excess wires. This will keep your new motorcycle grips firmly and securely in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's best to get the new grips from an authorized Yamaha dealer to ensure that they'll fit correctly.
