How to Cut a Chair Rail in the Corner to Go Over Wainscoting thumbnail
A chair rail can be installed over wainscoting in a dining room.

When you install wainscoting on one or more walls in your home, seams and edges will show. Hide the edges on the top of wainscoting by adding a chair rail. If a chair rail is being installed around a room, you'll have to cut it to fit into a corner. A compound miter saw can accomplish this, putting a 45-degree angle on the ends of the chair rail. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the wall with the tape measure.

    • 2

Transfer the measurements to a section or chair rail. Make a mark on the chair rail with a pencil. Trim off any excess by cutting on the pencil mark with the circular saw.

    • 3

Adjust the setting on the miter saw to align the table and blade tilt for a 45-degree cut.

    • 4

Lay the section of chair rail that will be on the left side of the corner, face up, on the miter saw. The top part of the chair rail should rest on the back of the saw.

    • 5

Press the trigger and then pull down on the handle to make a 45-degree cut in the chair rail.

    • 6

Adjust the table setting on the miter saw to the opposite setting from Step 3.

    • 7

Lay the section of chair rail that will be on the right side of the corner, face up, on the miter saw. Press the trigger and pull down the handle to make the 45-degree cut.

    • 8

Slide the stud finder along the wall to locate the studs. Mark the studs' location with the pencil

    • 9

Set the left section chair rail over the top of the wainscoting and secure it to the wall with finish nails, using a hammer or nail gun.

    • 10

Set the right section of chair rail into the corner so that the two 45-degree angles meet. Repeat Step 9 to secure the chair rail to the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • A 45-degree cut can be made for the inside corner of a wall and the outside corner of a wall.

  • If the miter saw is not set to the correct blade angle, you will not get a 45-degree cut.
