How to Make Easy Crocheted Flowers
All you need to create flowers that will never wilt is a crochet hook, yarn and a little crochet know-how. Crochet flowers make ideal embellishments for everything from fabric tote bags and purses to plain tee shirts and skirts. You can also attach a finished crochet flower to a bar pin, barrette or hair tie to create an instant accessory. Even of you're new to the craft, you can create simple crochet flowers in under an hour. You only need to know basic crochet stitches, such as the chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet.
Things You'll Need
- Crochet hook
- Small amount of sport or worsted weight yarn
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Instructions
-
Mini Flowers
-
1
Crochet a foundation chain of four chain stitches using a US size F crochet hook and sport weight yarn.
-
2
Slip stitch into the first chain stitch to create a ring from the foundation chain. To slip stitch, slide your crochet hook under the v-shaped top of the first stitch, yarn over, wrapping your yarn from back to front, and draw your hook and the yarn over back through the remaining two loops on the hook.
-
-
3
Single crochet into the ring eight times, inserting your hook into the center of the ring, working a yarn over, drawing back through the ring, working one more yarn over and drawing through the remaining two loops on the hook. Slip stitch into the first single crochet when you get to the end of the first round to join.
-
4
Chain four stitches and slip stitch into the next single crochet. Continue chaining four and slip stitching into each subsequent single crochet until you get to the end of the round. Slip stitch into the first chain in the round to join.
-
5
Cut your yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail and draw the tail through the remaining loop on the hook. Weave in the ends of the yarn with a yarn needle to finish one mini crochet flower.
Six-Petal Flower
-
6
Crochet a foundation chain of four stitches using a US size K hook and worsted-weight yarn.
-
7
Slip stitch into the first chain to join the foundation chain into a ring. Chain one and single crochet 12 times into the ring to form the center of your flower. Slip stitch into the chain stitch to join the round.
-
8
Chain one into the next stitch to begin your first flower petal, then work the following pattern into the next stitch. Half double crochet one (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, draw through stitch, yarn over and draw through three remaining loops), double crochet one (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, draw through stitch, yarn over, draw through two loops, yarn over and draw through two loops), treble crochet one (yarn over twice and work as for double crochet, yarning-over and drawing through two loops until one loop remains on the hook), double crochet one, half double crochet one, chain one and slip stitch.
-
9
Single crochet into the next stitch and continue working in the established pattern, alternating petal stitches with single crochet stitches. When you get to the end of the round you should have a flower with six petals.
-
10
Slip stitch into the first chain stitch and cut your yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail. Draw the tail through the remaining loop to secure your work and weave in loose yarn to finish your flower.

Tips & Warnings
If you want to create a flower with multiple layers, change your yarn size and hook size to make larger or smaller flowers, stack them with the largest flower on the bottom and the smallest on top and sew a button through the center to hold them all together.
You can also alter the number of petals you want on your flowers. For the mini flower, determine the number of petals you want and work an equivalent number of single crochet stitches into the foundation ring. For the larger flower, determine the number of petals you want and work twice that number of single crochets into the foundation ring.
