How to Set a Motion Detector Light
A stand-alone motion detector light illuminates whenever a moving object enters its field of vision. You can change the default settings on the motion detector and set the light so it reacts to movement in a manner that is most acceptable to you. The procedure is straightforward and similar, with minor exceptions, for all motion detector light units that are self-contained and not connected to a security system. No specialized tools are needed to access the stand-alone motion detector's control panel. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open the control panel cover on the bottom or side of the stand-alone motion detector light. Typically the cover will have a screw or screws to remove first with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver, although in some cases, the cover will just be held onto the chassis of the motion detector light by friction.
-
2
Prepare to set the "field of vision" that the motion detector's sensor will respond to. Rotate all control knobs on the control panel fully clockwise. Insert the tip of a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver into the slot on the "TIme Delay" or "Delay" click-wheel (depending upon the manufacturer). Twist the screwdriver clockwise or counterclockwise to set the marker on the click-wheel to ".1" or the first dot at the extreme bottom left corner.

-
3
Rotate the "Range" or "Distance" knob so the line on the knob is against the "Min" marked text on the control panel. Repeat this procedure, only with the knob that lets you choose either "Light" or "Dark." Set the knob to "Light" so the motion detector light is always active.
-
4
Walk away from the motion detector light and then walk into the light's field of vision to see if the light illuminates. If the light does not illuminate, return to the motion detector light, loosen the screw on the bracket with a Phillips screwdriver and reorient the front of the motion detector light so it is aimed at the ground more than before. Repeat the test to see if the light now illuminates. If so, return to the control panel.
-
5
Slide the selector switch on the control panel to "Dusk" so the "Dusk" setting on the click-wheel is active.
-
6
Insert the tip of a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver into the slot on the "Dusk" or "Day Set" click-wheel. Twist the screwdriver clockwise or counterclockwise to set the marker on the click-wheel so it is against the "Light" marked text on the control panel. The motion detector light will now activate itself once it becomes dark and continue to function until daybreak.
-
7
Close the cover on the motion detector light; if screws are used, reattach the screws.
