How to Measure a Fire Pit

Safety should be a priority when constructing pits for outdoor fires such as campfires.

An outdoor fire can be a fun part of outdoor gatherings from camping to barbecuing to bonfires. As with any situation involving fire, safety precautions must be taken and safety rules followed to decrease risks of personal injury or property damage, starting with properly measuring the size of a fire pit.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Shovel
• Rake
• Gravel

Instructions

1. Measure out a rough circle the size of the base of the fire you intend to build; the typical diameter of a campfire is approximately three feet. Clear circle of grass, rock and other debris down to bare dirt with a shovel and rake.

2. Measure a second circle around the first circle 1-1/2 feet larger in diameter than the first circle. Cover this outer ring with gravel.

3. Measure a circle 10 feet larger on all sides than the inner circle. Clear all flammable debris from it with the rake, including leaves, twigs and dry grass.

Tips & Warnings

• Select a spot away from trees and shrubs and that is easy to clear of any flammable debris. Flames should be at least 10 feet away from the nearest tree or log, including overhanging branches, and 30 feet from the nearest house or structure.
