How to Burn Particle Board

Particle board is a very inexpensive alternative to natural hardwood or pressed plywood. It is sturdy under most conditions, but once it becomes wet it will never hold weight again. Many builders save money by using particle board as flooring in homes. Invariably it gets wet and damaged, and needs to be removed. Once removed, burning it is arguably the best way to get rid of it. The steps below will explain how to get rid of old or damaged particle board forever.

Things You'll Need

• Lighter fluid
• Lighter or matches
• Circular saw
• 2 saw horses
• 1 sheet of newspaper

Instructions

1. Remove the particle board from the home and place outside.

2. Place the particle board on top of the saw horses to elevate. If you have more than one sheet of particle board to dispose of, cut them one at a time.

3. Cut the particle board into approximately 1 by 4-foot pieces. Most particle board is 4 feet wide, so simply cutting 1 foot wide sections through it will work best.

4. Place the boards into a conical or "tepee" shape. Make sure to choose a safe area that is open, away from structures and close to readily available water, such as a hose.

5. Cover the boards liberally with lighter fluid, at least enough to coat. Allow two to three minutes for the fluid to soak into the boards before proceeding.

6. Roll the newspaper into a tight, long shape. Spray a small amount of lighter fluid on just the tip of the newspaper. Holding the dry end of the newspaper, light the wet end with the lighter.

7. Place the newspaper against the particle board. Do this quickly to avoid injury. The wood, if dry, will burn quickly.

Tips & Warnings

• Monitor the burning wood to ensure the fire does not get out of control. Keep a circular perimeter around the fire wet with the a hose.

• If a burn permit or other type of permission to burn is needed in your area, obtain this prior to burning the particle board.

• Avoid getting lighter fluid on yourself or your clothes. If you do, wash it off or change clothing before lighting the fire.

• Be careful around the fire. Do not attempt to fight an out of control fire on your own. If the fire grows out of control, call the fire department.
