How to Keep Mice Out of My Stored Car

During the fall months, mice look for places that provide shelter. If you have an old car you are restoring or that is stored, you may need to make it more mouse proof. Mice can chew the upholstery, wires and plug up the exhaust pipe. Choose a solution that works best for you or try several methods together. Just remember to remove your mouse-proofing precautions if they are in the motor or exhaust pipe before you start your car.

Instructions

    • 1

Place some mothballs in the trunk. Put more mothballs on the floor mats inside the car. Mice don’t like the smell of mothballs.

    • 2

Place packets of mouse/rat poison inside your car and in the trunk. Ensure they are not accessible to pets or other animals because the poison does not discriminate.

    • 3

Lay dryer sheets throughout the interior of the car and in the trunk. Place them under the hood and on all four tires. Stick a couple in the exhaust pipe. Mice hate the smell of the dryer sheets. Remember to remove all the dryer sheets before starting the car.

Buy some sulfur at the garden store. Find an old pillowcase and cut 8-inch by 8-inch squares from the material. Put a spoonful of sulfur in the center of the square. Gather the four corners together so it resembles a small bag. Tie the bag closed with some sting. Place the bags throughout the vehicle.

    • 5

Place a wad of steel wool into the exhaust pipe. Mice cannot chew through steel wool.

    • 6

Buy a large piece of heavy gauge plastic. Drive your vehicle onto the plastic. Pull up the plastic to cover the sides, front and rear of your vehicle. Tape the plastic onto the door handles and any other non-painted surface to keep the plastic from falling down. Do not put tape onto the paint or you may remove the paint along with the tape.
