Building a model airplane to fly can be done in a couple of hours or less.

Model airplanes are a popular hobby for young and old alike. Constructing a non-powered glider that flies is a good idea for a first-time experience. The project can take anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours. Customizing the model can be as much fun as assembling it. Testing it to make sure it flies is the end reward.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a lightweight material such as cardboard or foam that will allow the glider to fly. Research model airplane designs on the Internet to get ideas. Design the airplane and sketch it on the material. Cut the model airplane out of the sketched design with a box knife.

    • 2

Design flexible wings for the glider that are approximately the same size and shape. Cut the wings out of the material. Create two slices in the body of the model airplane to hold the wings. Insert the wings into the slits. Use small amounts of glue to keep the wings in place if necessary.

    • 3

Improve the aerodynamics of the model airplane by filing down the edges of the body and wings with sandpaper. Create a vertical tail for the glider out of the same material you used to craft the body and wings. Design the tail on the material and cut it out. Use the box knife to cut a small slit in the body of the airplane for the tail. Insert the tail into the slit. Apply a small amount of glue if needed.

    • 4

Customize the model airplane. Add decorative designs and paints to give it a personal touch. Keep the decorations to a minimum so they don't make the plane too heavy. Admire the finished product and prepare it for flight.

    • 5

Test the model glider in an open area free of objects that will interfere with flight. Throw the model straight up into the air and try to angle it to catch the shift of the wind. Adjust the glider in any sections that are preventing it from flying. Practice flying the model airplane until it flies perfectly.
