How to Teach Your Dog to Ride in a Kayak
Humans have a natural desire to share their adventures with man's best friend. Dogs enjoy partaking in outdoor experiences, however, training may be necessary in many instances to ensure their safety. Kayaking, in particular, requires ample time for a trainer to be able to practice key commands with his dog before embarking on a trip into the water. Be sure your dog is a strong swimmer.

Practice
-
1
Set up the kayak on the shore as if you were about to head into the water with it.
-
2
Hold the kayak upright and command your dog to get in. Tell your dog to sit immediately after he jumps into the kayak.
-
-
3
Instruct your dog to stay and slowly let go of the kayak--ensure he stays sitting. Repeat these steps if he moves from his place.
-
4
Command your dog to stay as you walk away from the kayak. Venture just out of your dog's sight before returning to praise him for sitting and staying. Repeat steps 2 through 4 if the dog moves at any point during your absence.
-
5
Equip your dog with a pet-sized life jacket before taking him in the kayak.
-
6
Command your dog to jump into the kayak and sit. Push the kayak into the water, then hop in as you would normally do. Tell your dog to stay.
-
7
Sit in the kayak without rowing until your dog gets used to his surroundings in the water, then begin paddling softly so you do not scare your pet.
-
8
Allow your dog to lay down--or even move around slightly--if he needs to, but make sure he does not become too excited.
