How to Write an Internet Reference Bibliography

How to Write an Internet Reference Bibliography thumbnail
To avoid plagiarism, it is important to cite your Internet sources.

Whether you are writing a research report or an essay, you will need to cite your sources. If you are using an Internet source for your paper, there is a strategic way to format your citation. These citations should be compiled in a bibliography format, also known as a "works cited" page or a "reference page." Citing your sources accurately is an important way to avoid being accused of plagiarism.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by writing the name of the author, beginning with the last name and followed by a period. If a specific name is not available, use the name of the group or website that you are referencing. For example, your entry could read "Jones, Sam" or "Journalism Society."

    • 2

Write the name of the article title or topic in quotations, followed by a period. Underline the title of the website, or place the title in italics. For example, "'How to Build a Home with Sustainable Materials.' Green Building."

    • 3

Include the date the information was posted or updated. Follow this information with a period. Also include the date you retrieved the information from the website. If the information in your entry exceeds one line on your reference page, indent the second line.

    • 4

Include the complete URL of the information you are accessing. This information should be contained within angle brackets. Again, follow this information with a period. For example, <http://www.urlhere.com/pageyouaccessed>.

    • 5

Organize your information in alphabetical order by the last name of the author or the next available information. Include one single space between each entry. An example of your finished entry should resemble the following:

Doe, John F. Article Writing Online. "How to Make Money Writing Online." 15 Apr
      2010. Accessed: 23 Apr 2010. <http://www.articlewritingonline.gov
      /makingmoneywriting>.
