How to Troubleshoot the Compaq Presario 1700 CD-ROM drive
The Compaq Presario 1700 is laptop computer that runs the Windows-based operating system. Although Compaq is now owned by Hewlett Packard, the laptop computer is still produced under the Compaq name. The laptop has a built-in CD/DVD-ROM drive that allows you to upload computer content and even watch DVD movies. However, if the drive begins to skip or otherwise function poorly, there are a few options available to you to correct the issues.

1
Fully charge the battery of the Compaq Presario 1700. When the battery begins to fail, the computer is not going to function properly and the disc drive may not work as usual. If you do not have enough time to charge the battery, you can connect the laptop to a power outlet.

2
Remove the current disc from the disc drive. If the underside of the CD or DVD is dirty you need to clean it off with a damp cloth. Dirt on the disc not only prevents the disc from reading correctly but the dirt can rub off onto the CD drive's lens, causing the actual drive to run into issues down the road.

3
Power down the laptop, leave it off for a few minutes, then power it back on. Sometimes when you press the "Eject" button the CD drive does not open. Powering down the computer and restarting it can correct the issue.
-
4
Insert a CD cleaner into the CD-ROM drive of the Compaq Presario 1700. The disc cleaner has small bristles attached to the bottom of the device. When played in the drive it removes dust stuck to the lens and laser of the CD drive.
-
5
Re-install the CD-ROM drive's drivers. If the drivers have been removed or corrupted, the computer is not going to detect any disc you insert into the CD-ROM drive. At the HP website, select the "Support and Drivers," search for the Compaq Presario 1700 and download the CD drive driver for your model. Once the download is complete, double-click on the file and follow the installation wizard to re-install the driver.
