How to Donate a Car to the Salvation Army in Southern California
The Salvation Army in Southern California accepts car donations to support their adult rehabilitation centers. Vehicles donated are auctioned off to fund programs at the centers. After the auction, you are sent information on the auction price for your taxes. If it sells for less than $500, you can claim a tax deduction of fair market value up to $500. It it sells for more than $500, you cannot claim more than the car sold for at auction.

Locate the title for your car, or download the Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227) form to replace a lost car title if you can't find yours. It must be submitted to a California DMV office with the fee, which is $18 as of April 2010.

Enter the ZIP code where your car is located on the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center Donate Vehicle webpage (see Resources). Select the type of vehicle, make, model, color and year, and enter your contact information and preferred pickup time. If pickup isn't available in your area, or if you have questions, you can call 1-800-SA-TRUCK.

Wait for the Southern California Salvation Army truck to come pick up the car. Sign over your car title and give them the car keys. Be sure that you get a donation receipt from them.

Car pickup is not available in all areas of Southern California. You may have to get the car to the Salvation Army yourself.
