Download software, movies, music and more.

BitTorrent is the original free software--and still among the most popular--to download music, movies, software and other files online. The BitTorrent client connects your computer to computers all over the world, downloading parts of files from various host computers while uploading portions of downloaded files to other users. The network of users allows higher download speeds, and the more people connected to the peer-to-peer network, the faster the download speeds everyone can attain.

Right-click the file in the BitTorrent window and choose to remove the torrent, disconnecting you from the peer-to-peer network, or continue to host the file to increase download speeds for everyone else downloading.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for torrents with more users connected to the network, both hosting the files (seeds) and downloading them (leeches).

  • Make sure there is sufficient hard drive space to store the downloaded files. High-quality concert recordings can be a gigabyte or larger, and video files are even larger, depending on the length and quality.

  • Audio files may require conversion before burning a CD or listening to them, depending on the format. Download formats you are familiar with or find a converter to convert audio files.

  • Not all torrents are legal, and some may contain copyrighted material. Download only legal material.

  • Some torrent files could be viruses in disguise. Download only from trusted sites and only files with positive feedback in the comments section.

  • Download files at your own risk.
