When paint overlaps onto window glass, a simple razor blade is enough to scrape the surface clean. However, some materials contain powerful adhesives and require specific techniques to loosen them from surfaces where they do not belong. Things You'll Need

  • Rags
  • Mineral spirits
  • Terry cloth
  • Plastic putty knife
  • Razor blade

Instructions

  1. Remove Varnish

    • 1

      Dampen a rag with mineral spirits and then wipe down the varnish.

      Allow the mineral spirits to loosen the varnish for 10 seconds.

      Wipe away the varnish using a terry cloth.

      Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 until the varnish is completely removed.

    Remove Caulking

      Dampen a rag with mineral spirits and then wipe down the caulking.

      Allow the mineral spirits to loosen the varnish for 10 seconds.

      Cover the wide scraping end of the plastic putty knife with a dry rag and then scrape the caulking free using the rag as a buffer between the scraper and the glass.

      Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 until the caulking is completely removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scrape away paint with a razor blade. Then wipe the glass clean with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.

  • Do not confuse mineral spirits with lacquer thinner, which is a much harsher solvent.

  • Do not allow the mineral spirits to drip down onto a painted window sill, as this may damage the paint.

  • Do not use a metal putty knife in place of a plastic one.
