Copy CD games to hard disk for improved performance.

Having the game CD present in the CD drive is a requirement of many popular video games. Most often, this is so additional content is accessible from the CD as the game is played. The downside to this is that game performance decreases substantially as the computer accesses content from the CD drive. Copying CD games to a computer's hard drive can increase game-play performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the ISO creation software and the CD drive emulation software. Many free resources exist, such as CDBurnerXP for ISO creation and Daemon Tools Lite for CD drive emulation.

    • 2

Insert the game CD into the CD drive. With the ISO creation software, copy the CD to a location on the computer's hard drive. This process may take some time and will require about 600 megabytes of space on the hard drive. Remove the CD when complete.

    • 3

Mount the newly created ISO file using the CD drive emulation software. This will make the file appear as if it were located on a CD drive.

    • 4

Run the game to begin playing directly from the computer's hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the CD contains any type of copy protection, it will not be possible to copy and run it from the computer's hard drive. Game developers sometimes do this to prevent piracy of their games.
