How to Change a Speed Queen Dryer Belt

Carl Pruit

Occasionally, the belt on a Speed Queen dryer will wear out from usage, requiring that it be changed. The dryer belt is constantly moving while the dryer is operating and is subject to extreme heat inside the cabinet, causing the belt to crack or dry out. The Speed Queen dryer is very similar to the Amana line of dryers, with the same cabinetry design and mechanical parts. Change the belt yourself in less than an hour and save some time and money.

  1. Unplug the electrical cord.

  2. Unfasten the screws on the bottom of the front panel with a screwdriver. Lift the panel up from the bottom so it detaches from the metal clips at the top of the dryer cabinet.

  3. Tilt the front panel forward and unplug the door switch connector on the back of the front panel by hand. Set the panel out of the way.

  4. Unfasten the screws underneath the top lid near the front with a screwdriver. Flip the top lid back so it is resting against the wall on the rear hinges.

  5. Remove the two springs attached to the motor cradle with a pair of pliers to loosen the tension on the belt. Unfasten the four bolts that secure the motor to the motor cradle with a socket wrench.

  6. Unplug the electrical wiring harness attached to the motor, removing it by hand. Take the motor off the motor carriage and remove the belt from the motor pulley.

  7. Take the belt off the dryer drum, removing it from the dryer. Place the new belt around the drum and around the motor pulley, plugging the electrical wiring harness into the motor by hand.

  8. Secure the motor to the motor carriage with bolts. Attach the metal springs to the motor carriage with pliers.

  9. Flip the top lid back down over the dryer cabinet and attach the screws underneath the top of the cabinet. Plug the door switch connector into the back of the front panel by hand.

  10. Place the front panel over the metal clips at the top of the dryer cabinet, securing the bottom of the panel with screws. Plug the electrical cord back in.
