How to Hang Incense Burners

Put your incense in a hanging burner.

People use incense for many different reasons. For thousands of years, magical practitioners have used it in spells and rituals to help carry their intentions to the sky, to ward off enemy spells and spirits and to represent the element of air. Some Christian religions, such as Orthodox and Catholic, use incense in some of their ceremonies, as do the Japanese. The most common use of incense, however, is to clear the air in your home and make everything smell pleasant, similar to an air freshener. Some also burn it outside because the smoke helps keep away mosquitoes.

Though there are many kinds of incense burners, the hanging incense burner is perhaps the least hazardous and can burn more incense than other burners. They come in long ceramic tubes for holding stick incense and brass tear-drop shapes for cones, bricks or loose incense.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stud finder to find a sturdy stud in your wall or ceiling for hanging your burner. The studs are thick beams that support your walls and hold weight better. Place the stud finder on your wall or ceiling and move it slowly in a horizontal line. When it beeps or flashes green, you've found a stud. Mark the spot with a pencil.

    • 2

Drill a hole in the wall no larger than a pencil eraser with your electric hand drill. This is a pilot hole to make installing your eyehook easier. You can make your hole anywhere as long as it is vertically in line with your pencil mark.

    • 3

Place the ridged end of your eyehook against the hole and begin twisting to the right. The ridges should grab the wall and begin pulling the hook into the wood. Twist until the metal loop that makes up the "eye" of the eyehook is flush with the wall or ceiling.

    • 4

Slip the chain of your incense burner into the bottom loop of the S hook. Hook the top loop of the S hook into the eyehook.
