How to Make Homemade Teen Halloween Costumes
Teens can be especially hard to dress for Halloween. They are trying to define themselves and their personalities, they don't want to get made fun of for having a "lame" costume. They may turn down every suggestion that you, as a parent, give them. This can be a big problem, especially if your budget doesn't include money for a pre-made, trendy Halloween costume. The best way to deal with your teenager and help him or her come up with a successful costume is to help them go through their closet and yours. Odds are, both of you have clothing you don't wear anymore and can be made into something else. You can also dig through your arts and crafts supplies for inspiration. There are a few classic costumes that you and your teen can modernize with a few household supplies.

1
Make a witch hat by rolling a 3-foot square of cardboard into a cone and stapling it in place. Cut the base flat with scissors. Cut a second 3-foot square piece into a circle about two feet wide.
-
2
Set the cone on the center of the circle and trace around it. Remove the cone and draw a circle inside the first with an inch border between the two. Cut out the inner circle and snip inch-wide tabs into the outer circle. Fold the tabs up and glue them to the inside of the cone. Paint and decorate the hat as desired.

Cut the sleeves from an old Oxford shirt of any color. Cut the cuffs from the sleeves. Snip the feet off of one pair of textured tights; they can be fishnets or another design, as long as they are funky. Cut the legs of the tights so you have two sleeve-length pieces. Sew these pieces onto the shirt armholes and sew the cuffs to the ends of the tights.
-
4
Put on the new funky shirt, mini skirt, other pair of textured tights and the fashionable flats. You can add large, funky jewelry, sparkly makeup, and a wide funky belt to finish off the costume.

Make a small snip in the sleeves of an old Oxford shirt and rip them the rest of the way off to make ragged shoulder seams. Make some rips and tears in an old pair of jeans, too. Rip holes in the knees, tear off the cuffs, anything to make them look edgy.
-
6
Rip some holes in the body of the shirt that look like blade slashes, claw marks or stab wounds. Dab red paint around these rips and tears for fake blood. Spatter the jeans with red paint, too.
-
7
Smear some extra-hold hair gel into your teen's hair to make it stand up in funky, stiff spikes. They should be as stereotypically rocker as you can get them. Use face paint to paint tattoos on shoulders, neck and arms. Use as many or as few tattoos as you like.
-
8
Dab green face paint onto your teen's skin to make him or her look like a zombie. Use red paint to add gaping wounds and scars. You can dab a little on the sunglasses and guitar, too, if you like.
-
9
Put on the shirt, jeans, boots and sunglasses. Sling the guitar over his or her shoulder and your teen is ready to rock from the underworld.
