How to Wear White Denim

White denim is not just for after Labor Day anymore. New fabric blends and a wider variety of style options mean that you can wear white denim jeans, skirts, jackets and dresses that are comfortable and appropriate all year ‘round. The most important consideration to wearing white denim is to make sure that it fits properly. Buying a size smaller doesn’t make you look a size smaller. White denim is a little less forgiving than the darker denims, so purchase the size you are now, not the size you dream of being one day.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure yourself, or have a friend measure you. For jeans, you will need measurements for your hips, thighs, butt and inseam. The inseam is simply the measurement from the bottom of your crotch to wherever you want the hem of the jeans to be. For tops or jackets to fit properly, your bust measure is what you'll need. Refer to these measurements when you shop, because brands are all sized differently. It is especially important to wear the right size in white denim, because it shows every figure flaw.

Wear undergarments as close as possible to the color of your flesh. White will work if the denim is thick, but the line between white underwear and your skin will show through thin white denim.

    • 3

Mix and match fabrics and colors with one fabulous white denim piece. You can wear pretty much any print or pattern you choose. Metallics, animal prints and neon colors look exceptionally good with white denim. Black makes a very bold and classic statement.

Contrast textures of the pieces you wear together. Winter-weight white denim can be paired with either a pale, floaty top or a thick, cable-knit sweater and not look out of balance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep it clean. While blue and black denim gets more charming when it’s a little lived-in, white denim looks messy unless it is freshly bleached and pristine-clean.

  • Never wash white denim with dark-colored clothing because it can absorb some of the dark dye.
