A bumper pad--a padded cushion of material-- is a common element in preparing a baby's crib. You can purchase a pad with or separately from your other bed linens in a variety of different fabrics (mesh, cloth, organic). The bumper pad fits tightly inside your baby's crib by tying it securely to the the railings of the crib.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the crib is completely assembled and a mattress is in place inside the crib.

    • 2

Take the bumper pad out of the packaging and insert the bumper pad against the inside walls of the crib.

    • 3

Adjust the bumper pad ties to line up with each corner of the crib.

    • 4

Fasten the ties on the outside of the corners of the crib by taking one string of a tie above the railing and one string below the railing. Proceed to secure the other ties in the middle of the headboard and footboard of the crib in the same manner.

    • 5

Cut any excess material from the ties on the bumper pad with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • When tying the bumper pad to the crib, make sure that it fits snugly around the entire crib. Also, the crib ties should be from 7 to 9 inches in length.

  • If you don't properly secure the bumper pad, it may become a hazard for your child. According to a study conducted by the Journal of Pediatrics in September 2007, crib bumper pads and their ties have attributed to suffocation or strangulation. Read the instructions and warnings that accompany your crib bumper pad before installation.
