How to Make Shaker Cards

Adding dimension to your handmade cards is as simple as creating your own shaker boxes. Use scrapbook paper and card stock to create these decorative boxes, that have a window holding fillers that make noise when shaken. They take only minutes to design and can be made in any color, shape or theme you need. Design different style shaker boxes to add to your handmade Christmas, birthday and special occasion cards. Instructions

    • 1

Fold a sheet of card stock in half width-wise to create a card. Use any color card stock, and cut the card to make it any size you want. Use a rubber stamp to decorate and create a pattern on the card stock. Set the card aside for later use.

    • 2

Using a different color paper than you used to create the card, cut two pieces of card stock into small squares measuring approximately 2 to 3 inches. You also can cut different shape such as hearts, circles or triangles if you like, just make sure both shapes are the same size.

    • 3

Use a craft knife to cut a window out of the second square, to create a frame. Cut a piece of transparency paper to the same size as the squares. Place a line of glue around the backside of the frame. Press the transparency paper onto the frame to finish the window.

    • 4

Use rubber stamps to decorate the center of the other square. Place a large stamp in the center as a focal point or create a pattern with smaller stamps.

    • 5

Place foam mounting strips along each side on the back of frame. Make sure the end of each strip meets the end of another strip to close of the box. Do not leave any space between the corners of the mounting strips.

    • 6

Place a layer of fillers such as miniature seed beads, sequins or confetti over the top of the transparency paper.

    • 7

Peel the backing off each mounting strip and carefully place the focal point square, with the design facing down, over the mounting strips. Rub your finger along the outside edge to ensure there is no open space between the card stock and the mounting strips.

    • 8

Place a line of glue on the back of your shaker box and press it on to the front of the card you designed in Step 1 to complete your card design.
