How to Type a Reference Sheet for a Resume

If you’re currently searching for a job, you may need to provide a reference sheet to a potential employer. A reference sheet contains contact information for individuals who can vouch for your work experience, character and skills. Many employers make an effort to contact an applicant’s references during the hiring process so it is very important to identify people who can give you a positive recommendation.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of people you want to include on your reference sheet. Your list of references should include people who have personally observed your work or academic performance. You should list at least three professional references, such as past or current supervisors, co-workers, college professors or academic advisers. You may also choose to include personal references on your list, such as friends, church members or social acquaintances.

    • 2

Contact your references for their approval. Be sure to receive permission from your references before you include them on your reference sheet. You should also confirm that you have their current contact information. In addition, be sure to let your references know the type of job you are applying for and give them a copy of your resume. This will better prepare your references for when someone chooses to contact them.

Create the header for your reference sheet. You should include your contact information at the top of the reference sheet, such as your name, address, telephone number and email address. After you type your contact information, skip down two spaces and type the word “References.” Be sure to center align your text.

Type the reference section. It is a good idea to separate your professional and personal references. Make sure you list your professional references first. You should include the reference’s name, job title, place of employment, mailing address, telephone number and email address. You may also mention how you know the reference and for how long you’ve known her.

      Sample Reference:

      Ms. Shelia Jones
      Manager, Verizon Wireless
      222 Oak Drive
      Houston, TX 12345
      281-555-5555
      sheliajones@emailaddress.com

Ms. Jones was my supervisor when I was employed at Verizon Wireless as a sales associate.

Proofread your reference sheet. Take time to read through your reference sheet a couple of times to make sure you did not omit any important details. Use the spell check function on your computer to find misspelled words and grammar mistakes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only include people on your reference list that you personally know.

  • Use the same font you used to create your resume.

  • Save your reference sheet to your computer and a disc.

  • Never list your references on your actual resume. Your references should always be included on a separate sheet of paper.
