How to Prepare Jalapeno Seeds for Planting

How to Prepare Jalapeno Seeds for Planting thumbnail
Jalapenos are hot, hot, hot.

Native to South America, jalapeno peppers (Capsicum annuum) are part of the nightshade family that includes potato, eggplant, and tomato. Growing jalapenos is easy, but germinating seeds is a bit more tricky. Jalapeno pepper seeds need warmth and moisture to germinate. Place planted seeds in a warm place (70 to 80 degrees), or better yet, put them on a warm plate or heating pad. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a ripe jalapeno lengthwise with a knife. Scrape out the seeds onto a plate.

    • 2

Place the jalapeno seeds uncovered on the plate for 2 weeks to dry them. Put the seeds in a small paper bag (lunch bag size or smaller), and store them in a cool, dark place for 6 months to 1 year.

    • 3

Place the jalapeno pepper seeds in a bowl (cereal size). Pour 1/2 cup warm water over the seeds so they are covered. Soak the seeds for 2 to 3 days to soften the outer shell and hasten germination.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also can purchase seeds from nurseries and seed catalogs.

  • Cover seed flats or pots with plastic wrap to keep warm.

  • Start your seeds 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost.

  • Keep your planted seeds evenly moist, but not soggy. Fill your kitchen sink with 1 inch of water. Place your seed tray or pot in the sink so water is absorbed from the bottom up.

  • Choose early mature varieties.
