How to Learn Samba Online

How to Learn Samba Online thumbnail
Samba music is most popular in Brazil.

Although popularized by Brazilian dancers, samba dance steps originated in Africa, according to Ron and Rebecca Kellen via Dance Lovers. This fast-paced dance can be performed alone or in a pair. If you want to move along to traditional Brazilian music using samba dance moves, you don't need to sign up for a local dance class. Instead, use free Internet videos to learn samba dancing in your own home. With instructional videos, you should be able to transfer your samba skills to the dance floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your computer in a location on the edge of the area where you intend to practice samba dancing. This is most easily accomplished using a laptop. Keep the computer in a secure location on a sturdy table away from where you'll be dancing but within easy sight distance.

    • 2

Clear away space on the floor so you have enough room to samba. If you're only going to practice the steps solo, you won't need much room. If you're planning to add a partner for the samba dance, make sure you have more space. Remove items with sharp corners from around the perimeter of your dancing area just in case you fall while practicing the samba.

    • 3

Navigate to an instructional samba video online using your computer. Websites such as DanceJam and BallroomDancers.com feature instructional videos for both individual and paired samba dancers. Maximize the video so it fills your entire screen. This will make the moves easy to see as you act them out on your cleared-off dance floor.

Follow along with each step in the samba video. As the dancer moves her foot forward, move yours in that direction as well. Pay attention not only to foot movements in the dance but arm movements as well. Passionate samba dancers will sway their arms to the beat of the Brazilian music, especially when dancing the samba alone.

Get a partner to help you learn the paired form of samba. Contact someone you're comfortable with and who you know will enjoy learning to samba. Watch videos that teach both parts of the samba dance where one person leads the other. Follow along as you would if you were learning to samba alone.

Tips & Warnings
