How to Get a GED in Delaware

In Delaware, you are required to pass the Official GED Practice Test prior to taking the GED exam.

If you did not complete high school and have not tested to receive your General Equivalency Diploma, or GED, then you may be at a disadvantage when seeking employment opportunities in the workforce. These days, it is fairly standard for all employers to expect employees to have a high school diploma or an equivalent. If you live in Delaware and have not received your diploma, you may test to receive your GED.

Instructions

1. Ensure that you qualify to take the Delaware GED. To qualify, you must be at least 16 years old and you must have officially withdrawn from school. You must also either be a resident of Delaware or work in the state.

2. Locate your local Delaware testing center to take the GED exam. You can find a testing center near you by visiting the American Council on Education's website.

3. Visit the testing site to fill out an application to take the Official GED Practice Test (OPT). Delaware mandates that you must pass the OPT prior to taking the battery of tests that make up the GED. When you visit the site, you will want to bring with you a current government-issued ID and payment for registering. The cost of registering for the OPT is $35.

4. Take the OPT. You must score at least a 470 on each part of the test and your overall average score must be at least 2,250 in order to pass. Once you pass, you will be allowed to register for the GED.

5. Visit the testing site to fill out an application to take the actual GED exam. When you visit the site, you will want to bring with you a current government-issued ID and payment for registering. It costs $75 to register. If you are under 21 or are a veteran, you may have this fee waived.

6. Take the test. You must score at least a 450 on each individual test and 2,250 on all the tests collectively to pass.

Tips & Warnings

• If you do not pass the GED test on your first attempt, you may retake the test after a waiting period of 45 days. The cost to retake the test is only $25 per subtest.
