How to Make Checkerboard Game Pieces

While the iconic, plastic checkers are often red and black, wooden pieces are usually found in dark and light brown.

Checkers, known as draughts in the United Kingdom and in other countries, is thought to have its origins in the area now home to Iraq as early as 3000 B.C. The game has retained its popularity for centuries, and there are now computer versions of it. Traditionally, the pieces have been wooden, and they are easy to make. The family can help paint the pieces and then play the game together.

Instructions

If using the dowel rod, cut it into 24 pieces, 1/2 to 1 inch thick. If using plugs, skip to next step.

Sand down any rough edges on the wooden pieces so they are smooth and there are no splinters.

Paint 12 pieces in one color, and 12 in the other. You can choose any colors you want, from your favorite athletic team's colors to a color that matches your home decor.

Things You'll Need:

  • 24 wooden plugs or a wooden dowel rod (1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter)
  • Small handsaw
  • Sandpaper
  • Two colors of paint
  • Paintbrushes
