Being satisfied and comfortable with your computer system means that you'll enjoy increased productivity, especially if you're a daily computer user for work or school. Therefore, comparing computers and choosing the right one is crucial. Even though each system is different, one thing to remember is that many computer brands produce the same types of computers containing the same or similar internal components. This may be important when comparing prices for these particular brand models.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the three major computer categories of desktops, laptops, and netbooks. Make a pro and con list of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of computer. Decide whether you want to use a desktop or whether there is more benefit to owning a desktop-replacement laptop. Think about whether you need mobility in your computer, as this is what a laptop provides, or whether you will be keeping your computer in one location in your house. Make a decision on the type of computer you'll purchase.

Choose the type of operating system you want for your computer. When comparing Windows and Mac operating systems--the two primary user interfaces available--think about each in terms of user-friendliness and what you are already familiar with. Software exists to overlay a "Windows" environment on a Mac system, which makes the switch easier for current Microsoft Windows users.

    • 3

Compare the computers in terms of the system processor. Most computers for general, everyday use come with a single processor. Advanced systems, including both laptops and desktops, sometimes contain dual- or quad-processors to make the system more efficient. Do you use the system mainly for general word processing and Internet browsing activities? Or are you involved with high-graphics games, downloading and burning multimedia files, and using other advanced, high-powered software. Decide on a single- or multi-core processor based on your needs.

    • 4

Look at the amount of hard drive space each computer system contains. Choose the one that contains enough hard drive so you'll have extra space after filling it with the desired programs and applications. Most newer computer systems today, with the exception of netbooks, usually come with a minimum of 120 or 160 Gigabytes of hard drive space, which exceeds the amount of space the average computer user needs. However, those who want to store thousands of songs and video files or use specialty software that takes up room may want to opt for at least twice that amount.

    • 5

Review each system based on how much random access memory (RAM) it holds. Decide how much RAM you need based on how many applications and programs you run simultaneously. Compare the amount of RAM the computer holds with the amount of hard drive space and type of processor it contains. A computer that has ample hard drive space in addition to a multi-core processor may not need more than 1 Gigabyte of RAM as the system will already be operating efficiently.

    • 6

Compare the computers in terms of other specifics, such as video cards and audio speakers. Gaming users often need high-powered, dedicated graphics cards built into the system. Audio options, such as built-in computer monitor speakers, keep you from having to make a separate purchase for more hardware.

Compare the prices of each computer system. Look at computer prices at multiple retail stores and computer suppliers. Make a decision about which system provides the best value for the price based upon your needs and preferences for a computer.
