MTD produces a wide range of snow blowers to meet almost any snow removal need. Because MTD uses similar patented technology on all snow blower models, it is easy for users to maintain their snow blowers in peak form by following a few standardized procedures that cover most models. A user can learn to adjust or replace the scraper/shave plate blade in about five minutes using few hand tools, and increase the productivity of their machine dramatically by doing so. Instructions

    • 1

Park the snow blower on a flat level surface and shut off the engine. After the engine has cooled 15 minutes, pull the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. It should pull straight off without much pressure.

    • 2

Remove the four carriage bolts that secure the shave plate (scraper blade) to the bottom of the snow blower housing. The bolts are secured with four hex-head nuts which must also be removed.

    • 3

Remove the two side skid shoes, which will come free once the shave plate bolts have been removed. These are located on the extreme left and right ends of the shave plate. Remove the shave plate next.

    • 4

Replace the shave plate if it has become excessively worn, or does not shave the ground properly during normal snow blower operations. Hold the new shave plate in place on the blower housing, then install two new skid shoes, one on either side of the shave plate.

    • 5

Insert the four carriage bolts that secure the shave plate into the four shave-plate holes from the inside of the snow thrower housing, so that the hex head nuts will be on the outside of the housing. Install the washers, then the hex head nuts. Tighten all four bolts securely.

    • 6

Reattach the spark plug wire to the spark plug, then test the snow blower for normal operations. The shave plate and skid shoes should leave a clean flat impression in the snow if functioning normally.
