How to Replace MTD Snow Blower Impeller
MTD produces over a dozen snow blower models, each designed to meet certain operational and cost criteria for specific user requirements. All models are designed with ease of maintenance in mind so that you can easily replace the main snow blowing component (the impeller or auger) in under an hour with simple hand tools. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Park the MTD snow blower on a flat level surface, and disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting; it will pull free with a gentle tug. Place the transmission in neutral.
-
2
Remove the two shear bolts that protect the auger from becoming damaged from immovable obstacle contact. They are located on the auger shaft midway between the auger drive shaft and the auger side mounting brackets. Remoe them with a 1/4-inch socket and 1/4-inch wrench. Keep the bolts, lock nuts and washers together for reassembly later.

3
Take off the left side auger support mounting bracket located on the inside of the left auger housing; it is held in place with 3 1/4 inch bolts with lock washers. Remove the bolts from the outside of the housing. Set the bolts, lock washers and supporting mount aside for later reassembly.
-
4
Remove the right side auger support mounting bracket using the same procedures as for the left side. Disconnect the auger drive shaft from the auger blade by removing the Allen screw which holds it in place. The screw is set into a hole, so you may need to slowly rotate the auger blade to make it accessible.
-
5
Pull the auger blade towards the front of the machine until it is free. Be careful not to damage the O-ring oil seal that is part of the auger drive shaft assembly. If the seal falls out, carefully set it back into its groove with needle-nose pliers, being careful not to damage it. Set the old auger blade aside.
-
6
Install a new auger blade by following the dissassembly instructions in reverse order. Upon completion, test the new auger for correct action.
