How to Donate a Car to Charity in New Jersey
If you want to make a tax deductible donation to a charity in New Jersey, you can do so by donating a car to a non-profit. Only New Jersey non-profit organizations listed with the IRS are eligible for tax deductible donations. Even then, you can only deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. This is the price the car would sell for in a regular market where neither the buyer or seller was desperate for the sale.

Input your car details on the Kelly Blue Book website to get an idea of the fair market value. Note the "Private Party Value" amount. Also, check current sales prices for similar vehicles in your area on the AutoTrader website and in your local newspaper classified ads. Add together all the values you get and divide by the total number of values to get an average, which you can use as the fair market value.

Take your vehicle to your preferred charity, or arrange for the car to be picked up and donated through a company like Cars 4 Causes. Sign over your car title to the charity to transfer ownership. Get your donation receipt from the charity, which you will need for your tax deduction.
