They are often booked months in advance, and can be a very profitable business if you decide to start one. Keep in mind, there are many factors to consider when starting a banquet hall. Following the proper steps is crucial to opening a successful new business.

1. Learn the banquet business inside and out. Visit other banquet halls that won't be competing with you and observe how they operate. Ask a lot of questions. Most people are happy to share their expertise.

2. Create a business plan. This will help with financing and give an overview of the entire business including goals, management structure, finances, marketing, and operations.

3. Choose a location for your banquet hall. Decide if you will be seeking a facility that has previously served as a banquet hall or designing a new one. You will need a space large enough to accomodate at least 300 people, equiped with restrooms, space for a kitchen, storage, and ample parking.

4. Secure a business license to operate in your municipality. You will also need any necessary permits to run a banquet hall, as well as a liquor license and insurance.

5. Find a supplier for tables, chairs, table cloths, napkins, etc. Consider renting these items if you feel storage will be an issue.

6. Hire an experienced manager who can take care of the day to day operations for you. Have him hire whatever staff he feels is necessary to keep the business running efficiently. Have him report directly to you several times a week for updates.

7. Promote your banquet hall. Go to wedding stores and bridal shows, send out fliers, and contact large companies. Let them all know you are open for business and taking reservations. You also may want to create a website to show availabilities, what types of functions you can handle, and what features your banquet hall has for guests.

Tips & Warnings

• Expect regular inspections from the fire and health departments. Since you are running a facility that serves food, alcohol and holds large numbers of people, all safety measures must be up to date.
