How to Discover a Fake Burberry

Burberry is a design house that creates a wide variety of women's and men's fashion accessories and clothing but is best known for its distinctive plaid-patterned handbags. The price point for authentic Burberry bags ranges from several hundred dollars to well over a thousand. If you are shopping for an authentic Burberry bag, it is always best to make your purchase from a well known department store. However, due to the cost of these bags, many people find themselves lured to online sites and second-hand stores that offer "authentic" Burberry bags at a reduced price. While it may be nearly impossible to spot a fake Burberry from a distance, examining the bag up close will help you to determine its authenticity.

1. Check the material. The most popular Burberry bags are the Plaid Classic Check and the Plaid Nova Check. They are both made from canvas that is coated with vinyl. The material should feel at least as sturdy as thick leather but will have a slightly grainy texture. If the material feels flimsy or slippery, the bag is probably fake.

2. Inspect the alignment of the bag's plaid pattern. Burberry bags have plaid pattern lines that cross at 90-degree angles. Use your ruler or straight edge to check for any uneven or slanted lines on the bag. Additionally, the pattern on both the front and the rear side of the bag should be identical with all lines matching up on all sides of the bag. Look at the bottom and the sides. If the horizontal and vertical lines from the front and back of the bag to not match up perfectly with the lines on the bottom and sides, the bag is fake.

3. Inspect the hardware and trim on the bag. The bag's hardware should be inscribed with the Burberry insignia. Burberry trim is made from black, brown or red leather. If the trim is made from any other material, such as vinyl, or if the bag's hardware is blank, the bag is fake.

4. Take a look at the overall quality and craftsmanship of the bag. These bags cost hundreds of dollars because of Burberry's reputation for exquisite attention to detail. If the trim or stitching is uneven or if the bag looks or feels cheap, it is most likely a counterfeit.
