Employers sometimes conduct complete or partial interviews over the telephone instead of meeting face-to-face with applicants. But though these interviews may seem casual, the rules of a traditional interviews still apply. This includes writing a thank-you note to the interviewer for the telephone interview after you finish it.

  • Blank thank-you card
  • Envelope

      Write the current date on the top line of the thank you note. Skip a line.

      Write the interviewer's name and address on the next three or four lines. Skip another line.

      Begin the thank-you note with a personal salutation directly to the interviewer, using his appropriate title and surname.

      Thank the interviewer for the telephone interview and tell her you appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the company and the position for which you are applying. Write a second paragraph briefly stating your interested in the position and why you are a strong candidate.

      Write a final paragraph that invites the interviewer to contact you again with any further questions. Thank the interviewer for considering you for the position.

      Close the note with "Sincerely" and then sign your full name.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you complete the telephone interview, find out the interviewer's contact information (including complete name) so you can personalize your thank-you note.

  • Write the thank-you note within two days of completing the telephone interview and mail it promptly.
