How to Take the Water Pump off a '96 Silverado

The water pump on a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado circulates fluid between the radiator and the engine, helping to ensure that the cooling system does its job. When the water pump fails, coolant can't flow properly, and the engine could overheat and get damaged. Replacing the water pump involves disassembling a few parts from the front of the engine.

Things You'll Need

• 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Drain pan
• 3/8-inch breaker bar
• Open-end wrench set

Instructions

1. Open the hood. Unbolt the fan shroud from the top of the core support using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then lift it off the engine. Unbolt the fan from the front of the engine using an open-end wrench.

2. Attach a socket to the 3/8-inch breaker bar, then attach the breaker bar to the tensioner on the front of the engine. Turn the tensioner away from the belt so the belt goes slack. Pull the belt off the front of the engine and set it aside.

3. Place the drain pan underneath the water pump. Remove the hose clamp on the radiator hose connected to the water pump using the flat-head screwdriver. Pull the radiator hose off the water pump and point it toward the drain pan to allow the coolant to drain out.

4. Unbolt the water pump from the front of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift it off the engine with both hands and place it on a work surface.
