New skate shoe companies are constantly emerging, and every few years one of them kicks up the competition a notch by integrating upgrade technology to enhance performance and durability. Navigate to the skate shoe company website (see Resources). Locate the section where you can design your own skate shoes.

Select your gender and your shoe size and style. Both Etnies and Vans have customizable shoes for men, women and kids, and you will be picking from some of their top models to use as a starting point. Etnies offers the Fader, RSS, Callicut and Jameson. Vans gives you the option of either Slip-on, Old Skool or Era.

Choose colors for each individual panel of the shoes. Each company has a different selection of colors and designs. With Etnies, you can even pick different colors for the logos. Spend some time experimenting with different color combinations, and find the one that's right for you.

If you're trying to design skate shoes as a gift for a friend or loved one, take your time. Ask around and try to find out exactly what he would like before doing your customizing.
Since this trend is still fairly new as of April 2010, there's a good chance that other companies will eventually let their customers design their own skate shoes online, and you will have more brands to choose from.
