How to Single Crochet a Hat
Crocheting a hat is one of the easiest projects a new crocheter can take on. Once you get the hang of the basic stitches, a single hat can take just a few hours, and you can add your own embellishments, such as tassels, or use different stitches to alter the texture. A single crochet hat is a simple, fast crochet project to make, and you can use multiple colors of yarn, different kinds of yarn or even different hook sizes to make a unique hat every time.

1
Chain three, then use a slip stitch to create a circle. Insert the hook into the third chain away from the hook, yarn over, and pull the yarn through both loops on the hook. This creates your foundation circle.
-
2
Chain one for the first single crochet, then single crochet around the chain three circle nine times. Finish by slip stitching into the first single crochet. You should have nine single crochets.

3
Chain one, then make two single crochets in every stitch and slip stitch in the chain one. You should end up with eighteen single crochets.
-
4
Begin the third round with a chain one for the first single crochet. Make a single crochet in each of the eighteen stitches from the previous round. Slip stitch in the first chain one to end the round, and chain one to start the fourth round.
-
5
Make one single crochet in the first two stitches of the fourth round, then increase with two single crochets in the third stitch. Continue increasing with two single crochets every three stitches, slip stitch to the first chain one to close, and chain one for the fifth round. You should see the hat start to curve inward at this point.
-
6
For the fifth round, single crochet once in every stitch. On the sixth round, increase every fourth stitch, and on the seventh, make one single crochet in every stitch. Continue increasing every other round, with two single crochets in every fifth stitch, sixth stitch and so on until the hat is the width you want. Then, continue with one single crochet in every stitch until the hat reaches the desired length.

Tie off the yarn when the hat is the right length. Thread in the ends at the beginning and end, then wet the hat. If you are using wool, try not to agitate it or it will start to shrink and felt. Lay it flat on a counter and shape it, then allow it to dry.

Tips & Warnings
Use a paper clip as a stitch marker to find the beginning of each round. Every time you finish a round, move the paper clip to the next start of a round.
Use a crochet hook one size larger for the foundation chain to give yourself more room for the nine single crochets. Switch back to the size H hook once you've slip stitched the chain three into a circle.
Try other stitches once you finish increasing the size of the hat. Shell stitches, bobbles and ruffles can give your hat some texture and are easier to add in when you're not increasing.
