Kids' angel costumes made simple.

Whether your child wants to be an angel for Halloween or the church Christmas pageant (or both), there are quick ways to make an elegant angel costume. You can buy a pair of gossamer wings online or at a party store, but a sturdy, functional set can be crafted out of a cardboard box. This simple angel costume for kids takes about an hour to put together.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick cardboard, 2 feet by 2 feet

  • Gold spray paint
  • White twin-sized flat sheet or large T-shirt

Instructions

    • 1

Design a one-piece wing shape on the cardboard. It can be as simple or fancy as you like, but make sure that it's no taller than the space between the bottom of the child's head and her waist. Also, the wingspan should not be too wide for the child's shoulders.

    • 2

Use the scissors and utility knife to cut the wings out. Poke two holes a couple inches apart near the top center of the wings and one centered hole near the bottom. The holes should be large enough to thread the gold cord through. Spray paint the wings gold on both sides and allow to dry completely while you make the rest of the costume.

    • 3

Make the white robe out of the sheet or T-shirt. Very tiny angels can wear a long white T-shirt trimmed about six inches from the bottom with the gold ribbon. Use the needle and thread to attach the ribbon with a running stitch. For older angels, make a robe out of the sheet by folding it in half so the short ends meet and then cutting a slit in the top for the child's head (approximately seven inches).

    • 4

Have your child wear the robe and then trim it as necessary. The sleeves should not fall past her wrists. Trim the bottom so that the robe ends at the child's ankles and then stitch on the gold ribbon.

    • 5

Attach the wings by holding them onto the child's back and threading the gold cord through the top two holes, laying a piece of the gold cord over each of her shoulders. Have her cross the cords over her chest and then around the back. Thread the cord through the bottom hole and then wrap it under the base of the wings and around her waist to the front. Tie the cord to belt the wings into place.

    • 6

Complete the angel costume by encircling the top of the child's head with the star garland to make a tinsel-type halo.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to skip the sewing step, use hemming tape and an iron to easily attach the gold ribbon.

  • Use fast-drying gold paint--if the wings aren't completely dry they will transfer paint onto the white robe.
