How to Build a Pulley for a Science Project
A pulley is a type of simple machine. It is used to lift a load. This makes it easier for the person lifting the load because it takes some of the weight off them and puts it on the pulley. Making a pulley science project will let the maker study areas in science such as force, work, energy, effort and gravity.
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the middle of a wire hanger using wire cutters.
-
2
Slide a spool onto 1 side of the hanger that you cut. The spool can be any size but should be big enough to freely spin around on the hanger.
-
-
3
Tape the wire hanger back together using masking tape and slide the spool over the area you taped.
-
4
Place 2 desks side by side approximately 3 feet apart and put a 5-foot long pole on top of the desks.
-
5
Hang the hanger on top of the pole so it's hanging in between the desks.
-
6
Put a 6-foot piece of twine on top of the spool with both sides hanging down.
-
7
Tie one of the ends of twine around a brick.
-
8
Pull on the other end of twine to show how the pulley helps lift up the brick.

Tips & Warnings
Try this project with different items besides a brick to see if the weight of the object makes a difference on the amount of energy needed to pull it up.
