How to Install a Gateway Router With a Modem for Work

Gateway is a well-known supplier of computers and computer peripherals, such as hard drives, wireless cards and networking hardware. Gateway has two different routers, the 802.11b and 802.11g wireless routers, available to consumers, both of which can be set up in the same manner. Best of all, setting up a Gateway router is not all that difficult.

Instructions

  1. Setting up the Hardware

    • 1

Turn off the computer and the broadband modem, then plug the Ethernet cable into the computer's free Ethernet port. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled "LAN 1" on the back of the router.

    • 2

Plug a second Ethernet cable into the "output" port on the back of the broadband modem, and the other end into the port labeled "WAN connection" on the back of the router.

    • 3

Plug the AC power cord into the router, then plug the cord into a free electrical socket. The router will now turn on, and you should see the two green LED lights light up on the front of the router.

    • 4

Turn on your broadband modem and your computer. Wait until the router has established a connection to the broadband modem.

    Configuring the Computer(s)

    • 5

Click "Start" and access the Control Panel on your computer. From there, access the "Network Connections" window by double-clicking on the appropriate icon.

    • 6

Select the "Local Area Network" connection and press "Enter." This will open up a new dialog window.

    • 7

Click the "Properties" button. Once the Properties window opens, find the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" option in the scroll menu at the top. Select it, then click "Properties."

    • 8

Click the "Obtain IP address automatically" check box if it is not already selected, then ensure that the "Obtain DNS server automatically" box is also selected. Once that is done, exit the dialog boxes.

    • 9

Repeat these steps for each computer you wish to add to the router.

    Configuring the Router

    • 10

Launch your preferred web browser and type "192.168.1.1" into the address bar. Your computer will now prompt you to enter your username and password for the router. If you have been supplied with a unique password and username, enter them now. Otherwise, enter "admin" into both fields and press "OK." This will bring you to the router's setup page.

    • 11

Click the "Setup Wizard" option in the left portion of the screen to start the router's setup process.

    • 12

Click the option that pertains to the type of connection you have (if you have a DSL modem you would select the "DSL" option) and then click "Next." Depending on what connection type you specified, the setup process will ask you for additional information. Enter that information and click "Next."

    • 13

Click the option that corresponds to how your ISP handles your computer's IP address. If the ISP assigns you a new IP address every time you connect, select the "Dynamic" option. If they provide you with a static address, select the "Static" option and type in the IP address provided for you. Click "Next" when finished.

    • 14

Enable the "Test Internet Connection" check box, then click the "Finish" button. Your router will now make sure the setup has been done correctly by testing the Internet connection. Once that has finished, your router is ready to be used by your office computers. Simply plug each computer into the back of the router with an Ethernet cable.
