How to Become a Licensed Real Estate Broker in Maryland
The path to a career as a Maryland real estate broker is long, but not overly difficult. Maryland expects a fair amount of training and on-the-job experience from broker applicants. The successful real estate broker will possess good communication and sales skills and an understanding of the community and national real estate trends.

Work for at least three years as a real estate salesperson providing brokerage services in Maryland unless you possess a law degree and are licensed to practice law in Maryland. Maryland attorneys are exempt from education and experience requirements.

Sign up for a state-approved training program that includes a three-hour ethics course. Maryland maintains a list of approved programs at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation website.

Sign up to take the broker exam at PSI Online. Then take and pass the exam.
Maryland applicants must pass both the national and state portion of the exam with a grade of 70 percent or higher. The test takes two hours and cost $78 (in 2009). Exam scores are good for one year. Candidates who fail one or both parts can re-register for the exam.

Obtain a personal credit report through an agency of your choice. Submit the credit report to the Maryland Real Estate Commission by fax to 410-333-0023.

Complete the broker license application. Provide your personal information, exam results and proof of work and education experience. Submit the application fee, which was $210 in 2009. Wait to receive your license from the Maryland Real Estate Commission.
