How to Build a Small BMX Jump Out of Wood
Building a small BMX jump out of wood requires wood cut for the job and a few simple tools. BMX jumps can be created in a variety of shapes and sizes, from professional tennis court size wooden half-pipes to box jumps complete with stairs and grind rails. The most common small BMX jump is an easily assembled ramp style wooden jump.
Things You'll Need
- Two 2-by-8 planks, 48 inches long
- 2-by-8 plank, 36 inches long
- 40-by-48 inch piece of 1-inch-thick plywood
- Box of #10 Phillips 2-1/2-inch wood screws with flat heads
- Phillips screwdriver
- Drill with 3/16-inch wood bit
Instructions
-
Build a Ramp
-
1
Cut the two 48-inch-long 2-by-8 planks in half diagonally to form four right triangles.
-
2
Drill four rows of four guide holes with the 3/16-inch bit completely through the 36-inch-long piece of wood, starting with four holes spaced evenly 3/4 inch from the short edge at roughly 2-inch increments. Repeat this step along other edge and twice more 12 inches in from each edge. The 36-inch board should have 16 holes -- four rows of four holes running top to bottom -- along its length.
-
-
3
Drill four guide holes in the 2-by-8-inch face of each triangular piece of wood so that the 48-inch leg extends away from the bottom of the board and the 8-inch leg is placed against the board. Drill through the same guide holes now in the 36-inch piece of wood to align each piece of supporting triangle with a row of guide holes begun in Step 1.
-
4
Screw wood screws in guide holes attaching all four triangular pieces of wood extending out away from the 36-inch-long wood back-plate.
-
5
Place plywood piece over four ramped triangular extensions of wood to create one ramped surface.
- 6
-
7
Drill four rows of four guide holes through the plywood and into the top of each of the four triangular extensions starting at least four inches from the tip of the ramp closest to the ground.
-
8
Screw screws in all guide holes to firmly attach the ramp surface to the ramp base.

Tips & Warnings
Use a Phillips drill bit attachment to speed up assembly.
Ensure all screws are flush with the surface of the ramp or they could cause a flat tire.
Jumping a BMX bike voids most manufacturer's warranties and could cause serious injury or death to the rider.
